Smaro Skoulikidis has over 27 years’ experience with the United Nations, formulating and managing large scale humanitarian, post-conflict, recovery and development programmes. She has worked with a number of UN organizations, including the United Nations Development Programme, the World Food Programme, as well as Peacekeeping Missions, and is currently the Director of the Office of the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary General in the Peacekeeping Mission (MONUSCO) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. She also has a Diploma in Museum Studies from the Reinwardt Academie in the Netherlands and has been an advisor to the National Museum in Kuala Lumpur, Liberia and the DRC.

After studying Bachelor in Classical Archaeology in Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts, Istanbul, I attended archaeological excavations such as Smyrna and Pergamon. I studied at the University of Bonn as an Erasmus exchange student. I finished my Master's at the University of Maastricht in Arts and Heritage: Policy, Management and Education. I did my internship in Museum Rotterdam and wrote my masters thesis about the museum's community practice Authentic Rotterdam Heritage.

Her commitment to the defense of refugees and migrants’ rights has led her to comply and collaborate on various networks al local, regional and national level. From 2008 to 2015 was responsible of the Program on Migration Issues at the Institute of Human Rights Igacio Ellacuría S.J. of the Iberoamericana University, Puebla. In 2010 academic stay at The Westchester Hispanic Coalition in New York. Her research work has been developed mainly on women and asylum seekers especially in detention. She was coordinator of the Migration Studies Program of the Mexican Human Rights Academy (AMDH), consultant for the Regional Office in Mexico of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and founder and director of Sin Fronteras IAP. She has also been a guest scholar at the Center for Inter-American Studies and Programs (CEPI) of the Autonomous Technological Institute of Mexico (ITAM) and member of the National Council for the Prevention of Discrimination (CONAPRED).
